Jo has been dancing since the tender age of 2 ½, following her sister to dance classes. As a very shy 3 year old she performed in her first dance concert and as her parents put it “when she went up onto the stage, she came alive!” Jo has not stopped performing since. At age 4 ½ became one of the youngest contestants to sing on ‘Young Talent time’ and appeared on the show again with her younger sister 7 years later. She has appeared on numerous tv shows such as the Sullivans, Cops Shop, Super Saturday Show, and on the local tv shows in Ballarat. She also did modelling and was in family Circle, Post and people magazine. At 9, Jo began her love affair with theatre and made her debut as Brigitta in the Sound of Music. At 11 she was excepted into the children’s chorus in the Australian Production of ‘Evita’… and very excited to get paid weekly to sing!
Other theatre productions Jo has been involved in are: The Music Man, Merrily We Roll Along, Young At Heart, Merle’s Music Hall and Black and White Minstrels. At 18 she was dancing full time at Melbourne’s Dance Factory and just before the end of the course took a position as Magicians assistant in Silvers Grand Magic Circus. After spending 2 years being sawn in half, turning into a lion, disappearing and appearing from numerous boxes Jo went to perform in Royal American Circus and spent the next 2 years performing in Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. It was during this time as a dancer touring with the show that she learnt and began to perform the solo trapeze.Upon returning to Australia she toured with Royal’s Circus, performing solo trapeze, decent rope, flying Trapeze, rag doll contortion act and magic. She has also performed in Robinson’s circus touring the Entertainment Centres in Tasmania, Dreamworld’s Circus spectacular and Lennon Brothers Circus.Circus life also came with numerous newspaper and Television appearances in whatever town they were visiting.
After leaving that Circus Jo took a full time job at Dreamworld performing as suit characters, Cooee the gum Nut Fairy and in their Bushranger show. She performed around Australia, Asia and Hawaii promoting the park for Tourism Queensland. She also took part in Dreamworld’s Aquacade shows and when the Las Vegas show from the MGM grand came to Dreamworld for a summer season Jo was only one of two Australians invited to perform and was cast the main character- ‘ the Princess’ in their duelling Pirates show. As part of the show she had to learn stunts and swing off a trapeze performing a single layout dive into the water from 10m high!
Other shows Jo has been involved in are Brentleigh Theatre Restaurant, Crazies theatre Restaurant Gold Coast, Westfield Pantomimes – Grandma in ‘Red Riding Hood’, Catwoman in ‘Batman Returns’, wicked witch in both ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and ‘Tweetie Bird and the Witch’.Jo also ‘dabbled’ in voice overs- making several singing commercials for Sea FM and Gold FM.In 1996 she became compere for the Ronald McDonald shows for Queensland and Northern Territory and spent each week end and holidays flying to different destinations to perform shows with Ronald. In 1996 Jo opened up Showbiz Express Circus & Dance and for their first concert there were 7 students- one of which was Neal McNeal who’s son is now a student! Opening the studio was one of those progressions in life that just happened.
For the next 3 years while still performing, classes were just a 2 afternoon event- numbers building slowly. By 2000 however numbers started climbing and Jo had to decide whether to close the school and keep performing or to ‘go for it’…”By then I was getting older and performing wasn’t a high priority so finding a studio of my own and teaching classes every afternoon was something I really wanted to do”.
